Q: What is a GHSBB?

A: GHSBB stands for Global Health Students Beyond Borders. We are a group of graduate students at George Mason University interested in and working towards healthy communities around the world.

Q: Do I need to attend meetings? If so, when are they held?

A: No, but we would love to have you. We are a student run organization, so student input is very valuable to us. In addition to regular meetings, we hold special interest meetings for those involved in special projects or events with GHSBB. Regular meeting times and days, will change each semester based on the academic and holiday calendar. We also will work with class schedules to arrange meetings to be held when classes under the department of GCH are not being held. Check the events page for the next meeting date.

Q: What will I get out of the organization??

A: The organization is a way to find out more about the GCH department, meet other students, and find out about internship opportunities. We also contact many organizations for events and those are a good place to network with people working in the field and to learn about current health issues.

Q: Where do GH professionals work?

A: Check out our student bio page, where you will see where some students have done internships and also where they are working now. Our students have gotten jobs in a range of locations such as PAHO and USAID.

Q: Why should I have a practicum or internship?

A: Internships give you real-world experience. This is very important for giving you a competitive edge once you graduate and are looking for a job.

Q: How do I get information about internships?

A: Ask other students in the program, or check out the Opportunities page on this site.

Q: Are internships paid or unpaid?

A: That depends. Some internships are paid, but that is up to the organization that you decide to work with.

Q: Can I do an internship prior to ending my lecture class requirements?

A: Yes, but check with your advisor first. It is required that you have fulfilled a certain amount of credits before you start an internship.
