 The Integrated Regional Information Networks (IRIN) is a humanitarian news and analysis service that is part of the Communications and Information Services Branch (CISB) of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). IRIN is currently looking for an intern to work in Geneva for a period of three months, with a possible extension to six months. The internship begins in spring/summer 2010.

He/she will be tasked with:

• Research outreach and resource mobilization opportunities for IRIN in Europe and elsewhere as relevant, in particular with the media, governmental institutions, universities, NGOs and humanitarian foundations and networks. Make recommendations on how IRIN can collaborate with them in order to increase the external use of IRIN's products.

• Disseminate IRIN information and products and initiate contact with potential IRIN users in support of outreach and marketing goals.

• Assist in responding to queries regarding the services of IRIN from OCHA staff and external partners.

• Support IRIN’s day-to-day field operations by interfacing with various UN entities in Geneva on behalf of IRIN.

• Attend weekly interagency meetings and report proceedings to IRIN headquarters with a view towards flagging issues and developing trends in humanitarian action for potential editorial coverage.

Desired Profile:

• General knowledge of current humanitarian affairs and issues
• Strong computer skills: MS Office Suite, standard web-based applications and social media platforms and other current interactive information sharing tools
• Good skills in performing research and reporting relevant findings.
• Self-starter who is able to work with minimum supervision and, when necessary, adapt to changing priorities
• Flexibility, including the ability to work in a multicultural international environment and with colleagues located in distant locations
• Fluency in spoken and written English and, with preference, proficiency in French. Knowledge of other languages is an asset.
• Currently enrolled in a masters programme (Social Sciences, International Relations, Communications, Library and Information Science or other related fields)

Intern – Country Programs

The Global Fund
The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria is a global public/private partnership dedicated to raising and disbursing large amounts of additional finance to prevent and treat the three pandemics. The Global Fund has so far committed more than US$19 billion to over 880 programs in 144 countries.

Role Summary & Key results expected

Under the overall supervision of the Operational Policy Manager and guidance of the Operational Policy Officers, the intern will be responsible for:

• Mapping the current picture with regard to initiatives that require Country Programs engagement; and
• Working with relevant teams to develop a mechanism for Country Programs inputs into these.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

1. Identify and put together a list of, description of and participants in:

• All the big initiatives i.e. Health Systems Strengthening, Technical Assistance, National Strategy Applications, Affordable Medicines Facility for malaria, Aid Effectiveness, Grant Consolidation, Country Coordination Mechanism dashboard etc.;
• All currently active Working Groups; and
• Small (ad-hoc) initiatives e.g. Data Quality Strategy, Monitoring & Evaluation Systems Strengthening etc.

2. Describe the current mechanisms (systems) for Country Programs input with a focus on:

• How Country Programs as a cluster and individuals within Country Programs (e.g. Fund Portfolio Managers) can get involved;
• How to provide such input on behalf of the cluster; and
• How to get feedback

3. Develop and finalize a portal that has all the information generated through 1 and 2 above; and

4. Present the portal to Country Programs cluster (and others)

5. As needed, supports implementation of specific tasks and contributes to other work streams related to operational policy and strategic initiatives

Qualifications and Membership

Essential:

• Working towards an advanced degree in Public Health, Development Studies, Social Sciences, Management or related field.

Desirable:

• Completed a Masters Degree in the fields above within the last 6 months. Knowledge of Global Health Initiatives

Experience

Essential:

• Some experience or exposure in research methods

Desirable:

• Involvement/work with Global Health issues as part of Studies or previous internship

Technical skills and competencies

Skills:

• Strong project management skills with the ability to plan, organize, coordinate and implement work inputs from several sources and manage the delivery of multiple tasks
• Analytical and communication skills are required
• Strong writing skills
• High proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel

Languages

An excellent knowledge of English and preferably a good working knowledge of French or one of the following: Arabic, Chinese, Russian, and Spanish. Knowledge of other languages an asset.

CONDITIONS OF CONTRACT

Interns are employed by and are subject to the terms and conditions of the Internship Program of the Global Fund. A summary of eligibility and allowances;

Eligibility:

• At least 20 years of age on the date of application
• Pursuing a recognized educational programme in fields related to the Global Fund’s activities, leading to a formal university qualification/degree; and
• Have completed at least two years of studies at University-level, or equivalent, prior to commencing an internship; or
• Completed their qualification/degree within a six-month period prior to their application, unless she/he has to complete obligatory military service after completion of their studies, in which case the six-month period will start at the end of their military service;
• Are medically fit to take up an internship with the Global Fund;
• Have the required linguistic skills to work in the Global Fund; and
• Have not previously participated in a Global Fund internship program.

Allowances and Benefits:

• Stipend of CHF 2, 000.00 per month
• The Global Fund will cover the costs for travel for the intern to come to Geneva. Travel costs for accompanying family members shall not be met by the Global Fund.
• Interns are responsible for obtaining the necessary passport and visa or other documents required for entering Switzerland and for arranging accommodation.
• Interns will be covered under the health insurance scheme operated by the Global Fund.

Duration: 3 months

The Global Fund is a foundation established under the laws of Switzerland enjoying certain privileges and immunities in Switzerland pursuant to a Headquarters Agreement concluded between the Swiss Federal Council and the Global Fund on 13 December 2004.
